Product Overview

Molybdenum wire is a type of thermal spray wire made from molybdenum, a chemical element with the symbol Mo and atomic number 42. Molybdenum is a silvery-white metal with a high melting point, making it useful for applications that require high-temperature resistance.

Molybdenum is one of the most well-known and commonly utilized refractory metals, with a melting point of 2622" C (472O"F). Molybdenum wire is employed in various applications that require its particular qualities in the form of wire. These characteristics include high-temperature strength, limited thermal expansion, and a high melting point. Molybdenum has a low vapor pressure, good electrical conductivity, and is reasonably easy to process and shape.

Molybdenum wire is commonly used in the manufacturing of electronic components, such as filaments for vacuum tubes and cathodes for electronic displays. It is also used in the lighting industry for halogen lamps and in the production of heating elements for high-temperature furnaces. It is delivered in either self-contained coils or wound on transportation containers such as spools, reels, or bands. The product is offered in diameters ranging from 2.0 to 250 mils. Sizes ranging from 1 mil to 2.0 mils are only available on special orders. Rod is commonly defined as sizes bigger than 250 mils or cut lengths greater than 20 mils in diameter and greater than 12 inches in length. Fabricated pieces are cut lengths of less than 12 inches in any diameter.

Molybdenum Alloy Wire

During molybdenum coating, a 1/8" molybdenum alloy wire is dissolved by fire in a wire flame spray gun or HVOF gun fire showering and finely pounded on the workpiece with squeezed air.

According to DIN 55928 section 4, the particles in molybdenum coating form a fine to more grounded microporous coating on the workpiece that has been pre-treated by sand blasting machine SA3. By molybdenum coating, the surface becomes exceptionally retentive and can also be corrected for concealed erosion reasons. A porous, oil-retaining covering has crisis-running properties in the hydrodynamics, design, and vehicle industries, but it is not always required.

Molybdenum wire is known for its strength, flexibility, and resistance to corrosion and wear. It is available in a variety of diameters and can be used for a wide range of applications, including welding, cutting, and brazing.

Molybdenum wire is also used in the production of wire mesh for sieving and filtering applications. It is often preferred over other materials because of its durability and resistance to harsh chemicals. Overall, molybdenum wire is a versatile and useful material that can be found in a variety of industries and applications.

Types of Molybdenum Wire

R Molybdenum Wire

Type R molybdenum wire is made of high-purity (99'95% min.) molybdenum, making it ideal for a variety of fabrications and applications. As customer applications get strict, product and processing requirements become more stringent and, as a result, more expensive.

KW Molybdenum Wire

KW molybdenum wire is constructed from the same high-purity material as KW molybdenum wire but has undergone further treatment to provide a higher recrystallization temperature and approximately 40% higher tensile strength at elevated temperatures. This product is particularly suitable in applications that demand recrystallization retardation, better tensile strength at hotter temperatures, and a higher degree of room temperature stiffness. After cycling through increased temperatures, KW moly wire exhibits better room temperature ductility than Type R.

Molybdenum Wire Uses

  • Molybdenum Wire is utilized in the form of molybdic oxide or ferromolybdenum to achieve the appropriate metallurgical characteristics.
  • Molybdenum Wire is mixed in various amounts to provide desired attributes such as improved strength, hardness, and resistance to corrosion, temperature, and chipping.
  • Molybdenum alloy wire is also used in permanent magnet alloys.
  • It is utilized as a refractory metal in various electrical and electronic components, as well as as a resistance element in electric furnaces and other equipment that operates at extremely high temperatures.
  • Nonmetallurgical applications include lubricants, catalysts, and pigments, as an ingredient in oil and greases, aerosol sprays, surface friction reduction, and as an antiwear and antifriction agent in polymers.
  • Molybdenum is essential in the energy industry and may become an even more important part of green technologies.
